andrea i. copland is an oboist, music historian, and librarian based in baltimore, md where she also teaches with the baltimore symphony orchestra’s OrchKids program. she writes outward sound as a conversational guide to music so anyone can translate what they hear and experience regardless of musical training.

andrea has dual master’s of music degrees in oboe performance and music history from the peabody institute of the johns hopkins university and is currently the research coordinator at the répertoire international de la presse musicale (ripm) database. this blog is her homemade antidote to “the conservatory” and supplements her work as a public musicologist, which includes pre-concert talks and community education courses in music for both children and adults throughout baltimore city.
